City Council Gender Identity Vote

Next Wednesday (April 2) the Kansas City Council will vote on whether to update the city's nondiscrimination ordinance to include protections from discrimination based on gender identity. While currently, it is illegal in Kansas City to discriminate in housing, employment and public accommodation against gays and lesbians and bisexuals, it is perfectly legal to discriminate against transgender people. If the proposed ordinance passes, this will change.

Next Wednesday at noon, a City Council committee will take up the ordinance. You can help ensure its passage by:

• Attending the hearing, to be held next Wednesday, April 2nd at noon at City Hall in the 10th floor conference room. (Simply park in the parking garage at 12th and Oak, cross the street and take the elevator up to the 10th floor; the conference room is to the left as you get off the elevator.)
• Emailing the City Council. Email addresses are below. You don't have to live in their district or even in KCMO. You can send one email to all of them.
• Sending a letter by mail or fax to the Council. Often, letters get more attention than email. Mailing address and fax number are below.

Keep your emails and letters to the point. Share your personal story, provide some statistics if you have them, tell them this is the right thing to do!
